Hold on a minute, everybody...maybe I'm jumpin' into this too fast! Yesterday I spent a long time going over every posting on the Forum that discussed aftermarket mufflers. This took me back to April 1999, 3 years ago! The consensus regarding the Jardine slip-on was that EVERYBODY agreed that it was a loud muffler. Some said it was VERY loud, and one even suggested that it was OBNOXIOUSLY loud! Now, I know many of you like loud mufflers, and I respect your preferences, but I've got to have an exhaust that sounds robust, yet not overly aggressive. I know that sound evaluations are subjective, but I'm afraid that due to the unanimity of the comments regarding it, I'm going to have to rule out the Jardine. There was one poster who installed a MAC. His statement was: "You want LOUD? Get a MAC!" He said anything louder would have to be a straight pipe! So the MAC is definitely out. The Supertrapp? Probably the best engineered, most versatile silencer in motorcycle history.
I simply don't like the megaphone shape and the discs on the end.
This leaves me to making my own muffler, and tailoring it to my sonic preference! It's easy to do...I'll just try different lengths and diameters of chrome tubing, and fit them with baffles of varying length until I get MY sound! The tubing, baffles, and heat shields are all available from local auto parts stores and mail order cycle catalogs. Some of you are running Davidson mufflers. Maybe I can try a Davidson, too...I'll check out local HD shops for used ones.
(I don't like to use the name Harley!) Making special brackets is easy. I made an adapter that attached my "straight pipe" to the stock Savage rear hanger. This is what I'll do, and I know that Brian Felsher will approve!
STROKE ON...
